₪ In general, Lieutenant is a child. He does stupid things and asks a lot of questions. There is only one thing he doesn't question--running. From the day he was born, Louis knew that it was in his blood to run. The only problem is that he runs himself to exhaustion. He's a little ball of fire all the time. Incredibly impatient, most people would sooner give up on him than keep working.

With the other horses, Louis acts like a puppy. He wants to play with everyone and is a bit dimwitted when it comes to clear signs of "back off". He'd like to think of everybody as his friend and most people find that to be hilarious. The boy seems perfectly at ease galloping up to the most anti-social horse alive and trying to play with it. He's just too innocent to get the subtlties of life.

People are no exception. He wants to love with every person living or dead. If left to his own devices, Louis will try and nudge everyone in the back trying to find a playmate. He always seems to need entertainment and busy people just can't provide it. His rider is one of the few exceptions. He always has time for his colt and dotes on the horse like a child.

People have figured out that the colt needs to run and be entertained, so racing is a natural choice of career. He breaks from the gate fast and doesn't really understand the slowing down part. The problem is that sometimes, he tries to play with the other racehorses and that causes a few problems when it comes down to focus. Focusing on running the race isn't something Louis is good at. He focuses well enough to understand 'Go!' but not much more. He runs the track because he loves it.

Louis doesn't start very well, but if he does, then there's no stopping him for the first few furlonngs until he figures out that everyone else is behind him and stops to wait up. At the back of the pack, his ability to keep up with the pack before picking up the pace in the last several furlongs is his best advantage. He can run the short races, but in order to place, he needs to hang near the middle of the pack rather than the back. Having so many horses crammed in around Louis is a bit claustophobic and doesn't sit well with the baby's nerves. He wants to play with them, but he also wants to run. Small internal battles over playing and running mean that he's no longer focused on the race. Training should help him to find his niche in the race and the pack.

Everyone is hoping that Louis will calm down enough in his later years to focus more on the race and less on playing with the field. It's obvious to Merganser that Louis has a good chance at being a great racer, but first, he needs discipline.

History
ǂ Whaia te maramatanga ǂ

Louis was born to a local farm in Illinois, but due to the collapsing economy, the owners of the farm were forced to declare bankruptcy even after trying to sell all their horses. Jennifer Parks was a good friend to the owner of the farm and after watching Louis romp around as a foal, decided to buy him and train him as a racehorse.
